Why Aqua Bad Cortina?

Why "Bad"?
"Bad" is German and means "bath"... from here we deduce the meaning of the name "Bad Cortina": "Bath Cortina". This is how the hotel in the 60s is called. After a brief period in which it is called "Bad Corones“, from' '85 in then, in '93 the name returns to the original" Bad Cortina". The knowledge by the majority of the population of the English language and in order to avoid unnecessary misunderstandings about the meaning of the word "bad", which in English has another sense, leads in 2003 to the decision to add the name "Aqua" and therefore was founded the '"Aqua Bad Cortina". Today, this fountain is part of the 30 officially recognized mineral springs in South Tyrol.
Why "Cortina"?
It is not know for sure, but it is a name given during the Napoleonic era. The fact is, that the municipality of Marebbe, of which San Vigilio is the chief town, is bordered by the municipality of Ampezzo, of which the chief town is Cortina. The Natural Park Fanes-Senes-Braies combines Marebbe and Ampezzo and in the huts and mountain lodges often the inhabitants of Marebbe and Ampezzo come together. There are several historical stories and legends and even today the "Summer Games", where the best athletes of the two municipalities gain for the precious stone called "Raieta", are alive.
What kind of treatments does the Aqua Bad Cortina offer today?
With the rearrangement of the fountain and the connection of it to the hotel in 2003, the mineral water is returned to flow throughout the house. Apart from the various fountains inside and around the house, from every tap of each room flows the precious water. The cure that today is offered to all guests is the hydroponic treatment, the daily drinking of this mineral water. The water is also served in the dining room and is also available as sparkling water!
There are projects in the near future that foresee the reintroduction of the traditional rustic bathrooms in a specially dedicated area for the curative baths.
The offer of treatments is completed by the pleasant path "Kneipp" in the river Rio San Vigilio, which runs right next to the house and a relaxing immersion in the jacuzzi, filled with "Aqua Bad Cortina", in the open air with a very pleasant temperature of 37°C!
The ritual of the weekly walk to the fountain - strictly with empty stomach!
"Aqua – Il Cammino." That's how the theme path is called and which may be reached in only ten minutes from the hotel leading to the fountain Aqua Bad Cortina. Every Tuesday with nice weather, we start promptly at 08.00 am for the walk to the fountain. Philosophical thoughts installed along the walk accompany us on our walk. You will visit the technical part of the fountain with the tank and the fitting of recollection. You will be told a brief history of the fountain and then assist the real crowning of the excursion, the out-coming of the water from the rock: the fountain itself. At about 09.00 am you will be back to the hotel for the breakfast. "Vives", to life!
History.
The first documents about the inn "Kurtin", one of the top tourist destinations in the Dolomites, go back to the 1780's, where it was already known for the benefits of its water.
At the inn there are bathrooms where the small population of the then tiny village of San Vigilio, "the Plan" in Ladino, goes "Al Bagn," so the Ladin name of the place, to wash.
We read of a landslide in 1806 which covers the fountain but which is removed in 1830 in order to start using again the well-established fountain and bathrooms.
At the end of the 19th century the University of Innsbruck undertakes the first real analysis and the reason of why the water has such important benefits is discovered: it is healing mineral water, ideal for several purposes. It is described as water containing sulphate, fluoride, calcium, iodine and traces of boron, barium, and bromine. It is classified as medium mineralized water (conductivity 962 mS / cm).
Following the analysis of this water, it was prescribed for the treatment of haemorrhoids, gynaecological disorders, hypochondriasis, gout and scrofula and it has been used for the stimulation of renal secretion and emptying of the digestive tract.
The tourism of the Dolomites that is in its infancy at the beginning of the century discovers for the first time the true meaning of "wellness" and the inn offers two types of medical practice: the "hydroponic" cure, that consists of drinking this water every day for at least two weeks and the treatment of "rustic baths", which consists in immersions in very hot baths adding herbs and medical plants.
The beneficial effects were soon known throughout the borders and in fact in more than one chronicle of the early 20th century, such as in the famous Germanic guide "Wohin?" in 1905 you can read of the "Cortinabad", that is part of the hotel Post of the Mutschlechner family.
Further information on the water and the fountain.
The temperature of the water at the fountain is 6.5°C at a rate of about 0.6 l / sec. The fountain originates in the crevices of limestone marl Bellerophon. The catchment area is the aforementioned Bellerophon and Werfen that provide to the water its characteristic components.
